(27 Dec 1995) English/Nat Black rubber and latex used to be the domain of fetishists. But not for much longer. U-S fashion experts say that kinky clothing is making its way into the mainstream. They're the clothes that fantasies are made of. This is fetish wear -- racks of black leather, latex, rubber and anything else that clings. At "Dream Dresser", a Washington, D-C boutique, you can find all you want to live out your wildest dreams. Even if plastic pantyhose aren't your thing, chances are you harbour some kind of fetish. That is according to fashion expert Valerie Steele. In her new book "Fetish: Fashion, Sex and Power", Steele studies how sexual power is conveyed in clothing. She says we're all prone to secret desires. SOUNDBITE: "In a sense everyone does have a fetish in terms of clothes and bodies. You know, some people like blondes. Some people like redheads. Some people like high heels or Levis. For most people it's just a question of preference." SUPER CAPTION: Valerie Steele, Author, "Fetish: Fashion, Sex and Power" She says those preferences are being noticed by big time fashion designers. The black latex and leather look, once confined to sado-masochists and punks, is now going mainstream. Steele says people looking for ways to express feelings of power are exploring fashion's fringes. Even the docile girdle has a message.. SOUNDBITE: "Oh, for a lot of women the girdle is just something incredibly uncomfortable to wear. But sometimes for some women it also kind of armors you against the world. So instead of soft, vulnerable flesh you're hard." SUPER CAPTION: Valerie Steele, Author, "Fetish: Fashion, Sex and Power" Fetish experts agree. SOUNDBITE: "It's a way of keeping your submissive in line if you want to corset them. It's like, it's just really uncomfortable. And it's classic." SUPER CAPTION: "Dream Dresser" boutique employee For men, there's the high-heel fetish, also finding its way into high fashion. But can all this fetish talk be true even in stiff, button-down Washington, D-C? You'd be surprised. SOUNDBITE: "They come in and they're very, very straight. They're businessmen, lawyers. Um, they usually want to be dominated." SUPER CAPTION: Pamela, "Dream Dresser" Boutique And it's not just moderated fetish fashion that's popular in Washington D-C - the hard core S&M leather look sells pretty well here too.
