This is the first custom-built 3D bioprinter that successfully 3D prints a fried egg using an actual egg. It sounds crazy, but it works. With a modified extrusion system, peristaltic pump, and custom firmware, it’s designed to print real biomaterials instead of plastic. The printer runs on Marlin firmware, allowing for precise control over extrusion, movement, and custom settings tailored for bioprinting. After a lot of trial and error and overcoming unique challenges like flow control, viscosity, and coagulation temperature, it all came together. The printer prints a simple 3D egg model based on spirals, a structure that ensures a controlled and even distribution of the material. The egg whites are printed first to form a base. Then, there’s a crucial time delay that allows the egg whites to partially coagulate and solidify. Once the base is ready, the printer extrudes the egg yolk and prints the top. The contrast between the glossy yolk and the textured whites creates a beautiful, structured, and edible fried egg—3D printed from an actual egg. But this is just the beginning. There’s so much more to explore, especially when it comes to different biomaterials.
