Forced Labour in the Hils, an upland of Lower Saxony Germany during the Nazi Era PART 1 (of 3) A search of traces of the forgotten places of forced labor in prisons and concentration camps in lower saxony. During the Second World War, a concentration camp existed in Holzen from September 1944 as a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp (alias Hecht) with underground manufacturing facilities for war equipment under the management of Minette GmbH, whose main partner was the Volkswagenwerk. Up to 500 forced laborers were deployed here. The concentration camps in Holzen were part of the plan to develop Hils into a focus of armaments in the German Reich. The Hils offered ideal conditions for the underground relocation of the defense industry. Under the leadership of the Todt organization, production facilities for the manufacture of fighter planes were created from 1944 according to the fighter staff.
