Amsterdam Concert 1962 Conductor: Fulvio Vernizzi Concertgebouw, October 27, 1962 If the expression “verismo” means to sing with “real” feelings and conviction as to stir emotions in the listeners, then Magda Olivero can certainly be called “La Verissima” The arias in this concert are from the first of a series of concerts given at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam; Magda Olivero sang regularly in the Dutch city from 1962 to 1973. The arias included in this 1962 concert are all from composers of the verismo school (Puccini, Alfano, Mascagni, Cilea, Boito) and the rendering by Magda Olivero is in the purest verismo style. She was known to send her audience into ecstatic frenzies and with reason. Armed with an impeccable technique and with a voice with an incredible flexibility (sul fiato), she could spin an exquisite pianissimo then augment it effortlessly into a shattering fortissimo. Also, she understood the true meaning words and their correct pronunciation, her resonant speaking voice was graced with low chest notes that were used sparingly and only to emphasize the dramatic tension, never in a show off fashion like certain sopranos do, trying to emulate her verismo style. Magda Olivero was a sincere and true artist that completely identified with the persona she was playing on stage, whether Manon, Tosca, Adriana, or Violetta. She once said in an interview that she had learned how to die in so many ways that she now knew what it felt like to die. Total commitment, that is in essence, why she has become a legend and why she still is “La Grande Dame” of verismo, “La Verissima”.
