From stage to workshop, Brandon Johnson bridges music and craft through the timeless art of violin-making. In this presentation, he shares the techniques and traditions of WNC luthiers—revealing how one instrument connects centuries of sound and Appalachian heritage. He has been a traditional music performer for over 15 years. In 2018 he first got the urge to learn more about old fiddles from his mentor Roger Howell. From that time on, he continued learning about repair and setup, and when COVID came along and stopped all performing opportunities, Brandon diverted that energy into building instruments. Today, he builds commissioned instruments and his repairs number in the hundreds. Brandon has also served as English and Appalachian Studies faculty at Mars Hill University, as Program Manager at the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Madison County Arts Council. Presented at the Southern Highland Craft Guild's Craft Making & Thinking Conference held annually at the Folk Art Center at Milepost 382 Blue Ridge Parkway Asheville, NC.
