Bowel cancer rates are rising in young people, and recent research may have uncovered a major reason why. Scientists have identified a bacterial toxin called colibactin, produced by certain strains of E. coli, as a likely contributor. This toxin can damage DNA in the cells lining the colon, leaving behind a distinct pattern of mutations. Alarmingly, this damage appears to happen early in life — possibly before age 10 — even though the cancer may not develop until decades later. What makes this discovery so significant is that, until now, much of the focus around early-onset bowel cancer has been on lifestyle factors like diet or exercise. While those still matter, this is the first clear biological clue that links a specific early-life exposure to later cancer development. It not only helps explain the growing number of cases in young adults, but also opens the door to earlier detection and prevention — including future tests that might identify those at risk based on this unique mutation pattern. #cancer #bowel #research
