Underwater Drone Footage Moosehead Lake Bottom of Kineo Bowl

⁠‪@MFEGoingDeep‬ setting out from the public boat launch in Rockwood, Maine; today’s adventure takes us to famed Moosehead Lake. Being the largest freshwater lake in the state and the second deepest surveyed at 246’ feet deep (fishfinder had 249’) the weather cooperated and I was able to make the 10 mile round trip canoe ride to have a look and see what’s going on at that kind of depth of water. I was surprised at the amount of life I saw, lots of reflective small potentially larval stage fish were everywhere swimming about. It seemed the light from the drone would make them shine everywhere I looked. Also some other smaller fish species similar to my recent trip to Sebec lake were present. All the larger game fish that I saw marked on the fish finder never really seemed to be much deeper than the 120’ for the most part. I’m wondering if the smaller reflective fish were juvenile smelts that spend the summer in relative safety in this deeper environment eating plankton and putting on some size away from potential predators that would make quick work of them in shallower water. Certainly just speculating here but very interesting to say the least and exactly why I enjoy doing this and exploring these types of places. I’ve fished this area many times over the years with good success and have always wondered what it looked like down there and today I was able to answer some of those questions!
