In modern Western culture, names often do little more than distinguish one person from another. But in Jewish culture and thought, a name conveys the very nature and essence of the one being named. It represents history, reputation, character, and power. God could have remained anonymous. He could have stayed hidden in darkness, shrouded in mystery. But from the very beginning, God desired to be known. He made His name known, revealing exactly what we need to understand about His character at the very moment we need it most. Knowing the many names of God is critical to our comprehension and application of the strength and victory that come from understanding His multidimensional nature. God wants us to come face-to-face with His power and majesty. Throughout the Bible, whenever God revealed a new aspect of His character to His people, He often did so by revealing a new name. God had a name to meet every need ancient Israel encountered—and not just them. Whatever our present situation may be, God has a name that fits it. As theologian William Sanford LaSor said, “To learn a person’s name is to enter into a relationship with his very being.” My hope is that you will be introduced to God as if for the first time—through His names. That you would come to know Him in ways you haven’t previously known. When you identify and understand which name relates to your particular situation, you can connect with God’s power to deliver and comfort you in that very place. There is nothing new under the sun.
