Built for Calvin Clark of Palos Verdes, California, publisher of International Surfing magazine, the Calico Surfer is meant to evoke the woodie station wagons revered by the surfing culture of the 1960s. It has a hand-formed steel body with ash appliqué woodwork and a cantilevered front roof panel that can be removed. French Cibie headlights swivel out from the nose. The chassis is rectangular steel tubing, engineered to take Corvair front suspension. The radiator ornament is spun brass with a sculptured gold-plated champion surfer The engine is a 289-cid Ford High-Performance small-block with Paxton supercharger and Iskanderian cam, driving through an automatic transmission and Ford Fairlane axle with 3.27 gears. Cragar chrome wheels are mounted with Viper TR Radial GT tires. The seats are upholstered in blue crushed velvet, with silver leather facing. The dashboard is matching crushed velvet with round Stewart Warner gauges the width of the panel. The entire vehicle is in excellent condition, but for a few scrapes on the bottom of the chassis. A classic of its era, it evokes the best of the surfing culture and the Kustom Kulture of George Barris.
