I use this wine key: Forge de Laguiole Ebony The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com): 96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. There are very few wine blends that have truly become global success stories — and only one that you can find replicated almost everywhere you look: the Bordeaux blend. Traditionally, it consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, with Malbec and Carmenère occasionally playing supporting roles. In the US, this combination is often labeled Meritage — a word coined from “merit” and “heritage.” As Bordeaux surged in popularity throughout the 20th century, winemakers across the world attempted to emulate the Bordelais formula. Usually, the original outshines the imitation—but I’m not convinced that’s always true with Bordeaux blends. So today, we’re doing a blind tasting of seven (?) wines made from classic red Bordeaux varieties. One is from Bordeaux itself; the others come from across the globe. My team selected and bagged the bottles, so I have no idea what’s what. Let’s find out whether the original really does beat the international challengers — shall we?
