Mahabahu-Brahmaputra, a proposed four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra river will expedite Growth, Development and Connectivity in North-Eastern states. The 250 Km distance between Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari in Meghalaya will be cut down to 19 km and will establish a vital link between the two states. This bridge over the Brahmaputra river is the longest bridge in India, spanning more than 19 km. It will meet long-standing demand of the people of Assam and Meghalaya, who travelled by ferry which takes 2.5 hours. Today in this segment we are going to talk about how this bridge will lead to the accelerated development of North Eastern states of India. PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of two bridges in Assam on 18th February 2021. He said that “Many bridges like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Setu, Bogibeel Bridge, Saraighat Bridge are making the life of Assam easier today. He said this strengthens the security of the country and provides great convenience for our soldiers. The campaign to connect Assam and North East has been carried forward today.” Talking about the ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ programme, PM Modi said that this will strengthen water connectivity by Brahampurta water through port-led development. PM Modi also mentioned the new routes are made for the convenience of the common man and development of the region. This bridge connectivity will open new avenues of tourism and Assam could emerge as a major destination for cruise tourism. Why the bridge is needed? The need for this bridge was felt in April 2012, when a boat carrying 305 passengers had capsized on the Brahmaputra. Since then, mending the distance became essential. The bridge will boost tourism and trade, access to education, health-care facilities and will create new employment opportunities in the two states. This passage is essential as it will provide a huge fillip to trade and commerce in the region, leading to accelerated development of North-Eastern states. Currently, small boats run between Dhubri and Phulbari which takes about 2.5 hours to cross the river but once the bridge becomes operational, it will hardly take 15-20 minutes to cross the river. The current longest river bridge in India is the Dhola-Sadiya bridge which was opened in 2017 and is 9.15 km long. “We have to work collectively to make Assam, Northeast a strong pillar of Atma Nirbhar Bharat,” PM said in his address. #MahabahuBrahmaputraProject #PBNS #PrasarBharati Follow us on Twitter: / pbns_india Like us on Facebook: / pbns.india Follow us on Instagram: / pbns.india Follow us on Telegram: https://t.me/pbns_india
