Alright, alright! I know I've been slacking a little bit in the content department, but things have been pretty crazy and I want to make sure that content I post about drums, learning to play drums, and recording drums is super slamming. Otherwise, what's the point? I've got some good ideas about stuff I want to do videos on, but just haven't gotten around to doing them yet. Plus, my debut album has been out for about a month now, so I'm juggling that too. I know, not a good excuse but anyhow ... Speaking of my debut album and youtube videos about recording drums in your home studio, here's a music video I made in my home studio for a song I recorded in my home studio. It's called "1985 World Champions" - a song in which I attempt to fit everything I love about 80s music into one recording - deep snare tones, tom fills that would otherwise get me fired, 808s, face-melting synthesizers, the "Porcaro" set-up (see thumbnail), synth horns (see Prince), catchy melodic hooks, chorus-y guitar tones, and of course, gated reverb (can you feel it coming in the air tonight?). This song always sounded like it belonged in an 80s movie montage to begin with, so I figured why not make the music video itself a montage of everything I love about the 80s - the '85 KC Royals, 80s drumset instructional videos (see cutaway kick cam), headbands, mustaches, muscle shirts, sweaty people running in slow motion (see me, lol), glowing neon lettering, the apex of the analog era joining with the new, unbridled allure of digital technology, and of course, 80s movie montages. So meta, right? Well, it gets even more meta. Since every Thursday nowadays seems to be "throwback Thursday" and today is the first ever July Opening Day for Major League Baseball, why not do a throwback-style video paying homage to my hometown baseball team, the Kansas City Royals?! Baseball and drumming go together like a hand in a glove. Plus, this is basically an instructional video on how to play the beat to this song, so we've come full circle. See?! Everything's gonna work out. I can feel it! ( ... coming in the air tonight?) (Sorry, bad pun.)
