In this tiny community, however, The City (as we refer to the region known as Old Town National City in San Diego County, California), can overwhelm its inhabitants. OTNC is a world unto itself. It's something of a hidden jewel, sliced by two major freeways, one of which runs the length of the US west coast. At first glance, it is just a concrete mess, but the proximity to the San Diego Bay (lined by shipyards) combined with a favorable latitude means weather is perfect nearly all year long. There's a vibrant hustle culture here: the densely populated area has many small businesses of nearly every variety. It is also its own incorporated city, with a mayor, city council, police, fire, and schools. The community is heavy immigrant, Mexican and Filipino mainly -- both the direct result of Spanish conquest and ancestry. It makes for an interesting and often delicious mix. Food is everywhere. And so here is a look of the City you've probably never seen. More to come. ***** GROWING UP OTNC -- the project My family turned to shit, and I want to know why. Drugs. Gangs. Prison. Homelessness. Death. Everything the United States promised collapsed for us. Are we typical? Is there some defect in our family? Was it the city, our surroundings? I am searching for answers, and I understand they might not be comfortable.
