For algorithm: Five Nights at Freddy's is an indie survival horror game created by Scott Cawthon, first released on August 8, 2014 . Players assume the role of a night security guard, Mike Schmidt, tasked with surviving five nights (from midnight to 6 AM) at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a fictional family restaurant reminiscent of Chuck E. Cheese . The gameplay is uniquely tense and minimalist; confined to a security office, the player must monitor grainy security cameras to track the movements of four homicidal animatronic characters (Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy) . Survival depends on managing limited electrical power to operate security doors, lights, and cameras. If power is exhausted or an animatronic enters the office, the player is met with a fatal "jumpscare," resulting in a game over . The game's origins and impact are as notable as its gameplay. Cawthon developed it in response to criticism that the characters in his previous non-horror game, "Chipper & Sons Lumber Co.", unintentionally resembled creepy animatronics, inspiring him to create an intentionally terrifying experience . Despite its simple mechanics, the game masterfully builds dread through atmospheric silence, unsettling audio cues, and the psychological terror of being stalked . It quickly gained a massive cult following, fueled by popularity on YouTube, and spawned one of the most successful horror franchises in gaming history, including numerous sequels, books, and a 2023 film adaptation .
