This major international exhibition brings together two of the most visionary and influential fashion designers of our time: Vivienne Westwood (1941–2022) and Rei Kawakubo (1942– ), founder of Comme des Garçons. Emerging in the 1970s, both designers rebelled against rigid social expectations, forging artistic and economic freedom through fashion. As self-taught iconoclasts, Westwood and Kawakubo challenged the rules of dress, radically reshaping ideas of beauty, gender, and the relationship between body and garment. Through bold experimentation with cut, form and function, they reimagined the traditions of tailoring and dressmaking—innovations that continue to disrupt the status quo today. Featuring over 140 works from the NGV Collection alongside key loans from international museums, the Westwood Heritage archive and private collections, this exhibition places their work in dynamic dialogue. It highlights their shared concerns, contrasting philosophies and distinctive design methods, revealing how together they have profoundly transformed contemporary fashion.
