Elephants play a significant role in Thai culture - they are the national symbol of the country and honored and revered as symbols of power and spirituality. Given their prominence throughout the country, elephants are a popular feature for tourists. However, elephant tourism has a dark past. Elephants were used for performances, rides, and close interactions with humans for decades. There is now a movement for more humane interactions with elephants, mirroring more closely their natural environments meaning no rides, safe distances, and engagement on their terms. We traveled into northern Thailand to visit an eco lodge that is home to an ethical elephant sanctuary and serving its local community through job training, housing, and support. Chai Lai Orchid is located in the foothills of the Himalayas and it is surrounded by lush, green jungle. As an eco lodge, proceeds are donated back into the community through Daughters Rising, an anti-trafficking organization. They are also home to a number of rescued Asian elephants. Over the past decade, Chai Lai Orchid has cared for over 20 elephants and visitors are granted the opportunity to learn about these amazing creatures, observe them in nature, participate in their feedings, and much more. Elephant Happy Hour is a must for anyone visiting - and you don’t have to be staying overnight to join in! You can purchase bananas and sugarcane to share with the visiting elephants while you enjoy a drink from the bar. Chai Lai Orchid also offers a number of treks and experiences that make your stay even better. Jump into the local communities, trek through the jungle, and dive into elephant care with the local mahouts through Chai Lai. Since we were staying a few nights, we booked a private jungle expedition with elephant care as well as a group tour to the famous Doi Inthanon National Park. The private tour was a great way to learn about Chai Lai’s elephants and explore the foothills more deeply. And Doi Inthanon is Thailand’s highest peak so the views were breathtaking. Plus, we explored a few local villages and an arabica coffee roastery with local grown beans. While rustic, staying overnight at Chai Lai offers an opportunity to disconnect, explore nature, and support the local communities. Our bungalow was off the main campus located on the banks of the river. From our deck, we could see locals enjoying the river, washing clothes, and of course, elephants bathing. We were even greeted each morning by the local puppies exploring. Chai Lai Orchid offers breakfast with elephants for those staying overnight. You will be visited by a mahout and his elephant in the morning with a locally sourced breakfast for you and sugarcane and bananas for the elephant. Since the elephants are free to roam, they might not stick around too long as they search for a tree to scratch on or more food to eat. Join us as we adventure into the jungles of Northern Thailand!
