Mercedes-Benz 500 K https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am... The Mercedes 500 K is the real Holy Grail not only for fans of cars with a star on the bonnet. Almost all Mercedes of the late 1930s were bodied by the manufacturer in Sindelfingen, but of the 342 produced, 41 were sold as bare chassis to be decorated by outside builders. One of these surviving Mercedes, dressed in British garments, has just gone up for auction. The one-of-a-kind body was made by the British company Windovers, whose work is most often admired on Rolls-Royce models. It is one of two similar bodies mounted by Windovers to the 500 K chassis. The roadster's streamlined, seductive lines, with its shielded rear wheels, sloping windshield, and long, sleek rear end tapering off, are reminiscent of French designs, and the details could be mistaken for Bentley. The Mercedes 500 K in roadster body was commissioned by William "Willie" Henry Rhodes-Moorhouse, whose father William Barnard or "Will", was a pioneer of British aviation. "Will" posthumously awarded the first Victoria Cross for aerial combat passed on the love of machinery in his genes to his son. The 500 K was first registered in London in December 1935 with registration number CLB 858. #mercedes500k #w29 #mercedesclassic #oldbenz source: Darin Schnabel ©2021 Courtesy of RM Sotheby's
