Selector Switches are one of the most common types of switches that you may encounter. They are typically operated in a twisting motion and feature at least 2 positions for on and off, but may feature additional steps for more settings. You have likely encountered selector switches when operating fans, where they may have an off, low speed, and high speed setting on the switch. Rocker Switches are another one of the more common types of switches that you have likely used before. Like selector switches, they usually offer 2 or 3 positions, but instead of using a twisting motion, the position on a rocker switch is determined by a spring-loaded rocker mechanism. Rocker switches are commonly found on devices such as surge protectors or industrial components such as drives or soldering stations. Potentiometers are switches that work by sliding or rotating contact that works as an adjustable voltage divider that is used to measure electric potential, or voltage. They move in a smooth, linear fashion, and will increase the strength of a signal in one direction, and decrease it in another direction. You have likely used potentiometers to adjust volume on speakers or in your car. Pressure switches, as the name implies, operate based on pressure influencing or not influencing the switch. These types of switches are commonly used as safety equipment. Depending on your setup, you may configure a pressure sensor so that a machine can only be operated while someone is standing in front of it, and it will then stop if there is no longer pressure. The reverse can also be true, where you may configure a machine to only operate when there is no one standing near it, where it will then stop if someone steps in front of it.
