Death and Reason | The Meaning of Death Dr. Dennis E. Bradford https://endfearfast.com What can reason tell us about death? Reason is a superb tool for living better together. What’s ‘reason’? I find very useful a Map of the energy levels of consciousness developed by David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. Intro to Map. To understand the 1000-level scale correctly, it’s important to set aside ordinary dualistic thinking. We typically classify objects as, for example, light or dark, hot or cold, good or bad, true or false, or love or hatred. Such discursive thinking can be as misleading as it is useful. For example, dark and light are simply different degrees on the same scale. Dark or blackness is the absence of light. Similarly, cold and hot are different degrees on the same scale. Cold is the absence of heat. Similarly, bad and good are different degrees on the same scale. Bad is the absence of good. Similarly, falsehood and truth are different degrees on the same scale. What is false wholly lacks truth. Similarly, hatred and love are different degrees on the same scale. Hatred is the absence of love. In that sense, then, the Map measures degrees of love. My hope is that these points will enable you to begin to understand how useful the Map. (If this remains unclear, reading Chapter 4 of my How to Dissolve Unwanted Emotions may clarify it, or, of course, reading some of Dr. Hawkins’s books starting with Power Vs. Force.) On Hawkins’s Map, 200 is the major division. Anyone whose personal calibration is 199 or lower is living a hellish life that’s filled with falsehood and hatred. Such a person’s life is filled with selfishness and powerful emotions like shame, guilt, fear, and anger. It’s devoid of love or even concern for others. Such people fail to take responsibility for the quality of their own lives. Anyone whose personal calibration is 600 or higher is living a heavenly life that’s filled with truth and love. (Such sages are less than ½ of 1% of humans.) Anyone whose personal calibration is between 200 and 499 is capable of experiencing some love and some truth. 200 is where love and happiness begin. Since love doesn’t really blossom until the 500’s, that, like 200, is a major division. (Such lovers are less than 4% of humans. 500 is the division between the material domain and the spiritual domain. So, unless you already calibrate in the upper 4% of humans, you may want to increase your happiness by boosting your own calibration to 500 or higher. Anyone who is committed to it can do it. (If you don’t know your own personal calibration and would like to, you can teach yourself how to calibrate it or find or hire someone who knows how to do it for you. [If you contact me, I might do it for you for a modest fee.]) What has all this to do with death? That’s easy: your personal calibration determines your understanding of life and death. That’s the chief thesis of this video. If you’re frequently plagued by unwanted emotions, you may well calibrate at 399 or lower. If you’re a reasonable person with sufficient rationality to diminish many unwanted emotions, you may well calibrate in the 400’s. The 400’s are where reason reigns. Nearly all the greatest philosophers, scientists, and artists calibrate in the 400’s. [See Hawkins’s Truth Vs. Falsehood.] Their contributions have made life much, much better for the rest of us. Death, though, remains a problem for anyone who calibrates at 599 or lower. It remains a very large problem for anyone who calibrates at 499 or lower. Permit me to give you a specific example and then continue to discuss it in the next video. Herbert Fingarette was a philosopher who recently died. He wasn’t a famous or a great philosopher. He was, like me, a well-trained philosopher who for many years taught students and wrote books. Death is like a black hole for reason. It cannot be thought. It’s conceived of as nothing. Since nothing can’t hurt, it’s nothing to be feared. Fingarette actually wrote a book in which he argued for that reasonable position. However, as he aged into his 90’s, he became dissatisfied with that position and his suffering increased. His grandson shot a video to record his old age that has had over 2 million views on YouTube. I recommend that you watch the video and then we’ll pick up discussion of it in the next video in this series. To watch it, go to YouTube and search for “A 97-Year-Old Philosopher Faces His Own Death.” Alternatively, either of these URLs should work. • A 97-Year-Old Philosopher Faces His Own Death • A 97-Year-Old Philosopher Faces His Own Death I hope that you find it interesting. Until next time. Cheers! Dr. Dennis E. Bradford https://endfearfast.com
