Vazhalikkavu is a village in Thrissur district, Kerala, India. It's known for its picturesque landscapes and the ancient Vazhalikkavu Bhagavathi Temple. Vazhalikkavu is situated near Shornur (approximately 30 km from Thrissur) in the Painkulam village, surrounded by lush paddy fields, coconut groves, small winding roads, and the scenic Bharathapuzha river The area is described as a peaceful and tranquil escape, with a calm atmosphere and gentle breezes flowing through large banyan trees. Vazhalikkavu Bhagavathi Temple This temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi (a fierce form of the Divine Mother), is believed to be around 400 years old, indicating a rich historical and cultural legacy. The name "Vazhalikkavu" is said to be derived from the words "Vaazha" (banana tree) and "Aal" (banyan tree), based on the mythology that Bhadrakali rested on a banana tree amongst banyan groves after slaying the demon Darika. The temple is known for its serene ambiance and traditional architecture. Festivals and rituals: The temple celebrates its main festival annually in the month of 'Kumbham' on the day of 'Aswathy'. A significant cultural event at the temple is the annual Vela festival in March or April, which showcases the ancient art of Tholpavakoothu (shadow puppetry). Artists perform the Ramayana story using leather puppets for seven nights in the Koothumadam, a hall specially opened for these performances. Special offerings include daily "Darikavadham Paattu" (songs narrating the slaying of Darika) and "Kalamezhuthu Paattu" during the Mandala season. Cultural Significance: The Vazhalikkavu temple and its surroundings have been featured in numerous Malayalam films, making it a recognizable location for many. The Koothumadam, a rustic theater for Tholpavakoothu performances, is a popular filming location.
