BATTAMBANG — One can make a short trip in the countryside in Battambang province by boarding an unusual train in this northwest region of Cambodia. Consisting of a makeshift wooden platform with iron wheels and a small gasoline engine fastened to a shaft by a simple rubber belt, the Bamboo Train, which is locally referred to as norry, is a popular choice for leisure transportation in the province. During the trip of about 30 minutes, visitors will cross bridges and travel along rice paddies, houses and pagodas. When two trains coming from opposite directions meet, one driver quickly gets his vehicle off the tracks to give way. One can choose round trips of 8 or 12 km costing a domestic passenger 10,000 riels ($2.50) and a foreigner 20,000 riels ($5). Children shorter than 150 centimeters can enjoy the ride for free. For visitors, Cambodian or foreign, a trip on the bamboo train never fails to be special.
