Along the Rhône: From the Camargue to Ardèches Wild Gorges | Europe's Waterways (1/5)

In this episode, the water takes us to the south of France. Starting in the Camargue, we travel up the Rhône, the most voluminous river in the country, past Arles, Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The route then follows the wild Ardèche into France’s Massif Central. The Camargue is a world between land and sea. Biologist Delphine Nicolas studies the development of fish populations in the Étangs - ponds from which salt was extracted. The route follows the Rhône to Arles and Avignon. Of all French rivers, the Rhône has experienced the most substantial engineering measures, including many hydropower plants – which we pass along the way. Today, natural habitats and migration paths for fish are being restored. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, vintner Patrick Brunel grows the Mourvèdre grape. It thrives well near the river, as the water masses ensure a balanced temperature. A little upstream, the Ardèche valley begins. The wild river has not only formed dramatic gorges for centuries, but also a gigantic cave system. With Nicolas Bransolle we discover dark corridors and grottos that are partly above, partly under the water. The Peschier family is at home on the Ardèche. Father and sons have won several Olympic medals in kayaking. Biologist Anne-Cécile Monnier studies the habitat of river trout on her dives. The journey ends on the Beaume river, a mountain stream even more wild than the Ardèche.
