How many whole beats should the tuplet cross? 3. Group and accent the subdivision row using the same value as the number of beats from step 2. Triplets are the first real counting challenge for most musicians, and it is important that we really understand how to count them accurately so that we can apply the same concept to more sophisticated tuplets and subdivisions in the future. As always, these counting approaches should be practised, felt and then forgotten as soon as possible. We don't have the mental bandwidth when playing live to be performing sophisticated counting operations in our head whilst juggling all of our other responsibilities. You can learn most theories by simply by listening and copying, but you should be able to understand and explain what you are doing which is one of the great benefits of teaching-trying to clearly articulate and grapple with a seemingly basic topic so that anyone can understand it. You can apply this logic to further more sophisticated topics which are beyond your comprehension instead of just coming up against a brick wall. Understanding the method we'll be covering in this video shouldn't be too complicated but by working through a few tuplets yourself you'll soon develop more confidence in how tuplets function.
