Top doctor says COVID-19 variants have become dominant strain in Alberta | FULL

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced on Thursday that COVID-19 variants have become the dominant strain in the province. Variants in the province make up 45 per cent of current active cases. The B.1.1.7. variant, which was first discovered in the U.K., makes up 99 per cent of all variant cases confirmed in the province to date. Hinshaw said because of this, the province will be offering testing twice to close contacts of all confirmed cases of COVID-19. Close contacts will be offered testing immediately and again 10 days after the last exposure. Hinshaw also said that effective immediately isolation requirements for original COVID-19 and B.1.1.7. cases would be aligned. There were 1,429 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Alberta on Thursday. Three-hundred forty Albertans are in hospital with the disease and 83 patients are in intensive care.
