Conference on Origins of the Expanding Universe: 1912-1932 Sep 14-15, 2012 - Lowell Observatory Presentation P.01 Daniel Armstrong Spectral Shifts A visual art (photo-media) presentation which alludes to the idea of the expanding universe as an evolving concept from a pre-red shift and post-redshift perspective. The work is presented in two parts, the first of which makes reference to the early modeling and mapping of the cosmos in the form of simple drawings and conjectures which illustrate the orbits of heavenly bodies, these can be considered as pre-telescopic and we might think of the work of astronomers such as Copernicus and Tycho Brahe. The second set of images considers the conceptualization of the universe in more abstract terms, a direct consequence of the discovery by Vesto Slipher that shifts in the spectrum of light received from distant nebulae (galaxies) indicated unexpected velocities of displacement invoking new conceptualizations of the nature of the universe and the revelation that it is expanding.
