The "Nerscylla," a Temnoceran first introduced in Monster Hunter 4, is a menacing arachnid that combines ambush tactics, venomous weaponry, and formidable web-based control over the battlefield. Towering over its real-world counterparts, it sports a pale white carapace accentuated by deep blue and gray joints, with vivid orange hairs lining its limbs and abdomen. Its front claws gleam in bright orange, while its other limbs remain a darker, earthy tone, camouflaging well against its environments. From its barbed front claws to the deadly hooked stinger on its abdomen, every part of its body is tailored for hunting, ensnaring, and dispatching prey. Unlike many other monsters that rely on brute force or elemental prowess, it leverages a methodical, predatory style. Its four powerful legs and two serrated claws provide not only a stable foundation for movement on rough or vertical terrain, but also serve as tools for holding down struggling victims. The stinger, laced with either a tranquilizing fluid or Deadly Poison depending on the subspecies and rank, is used to immobilize or finish off foes with surgical precision. Along its back, the arachnid displays toxin-crystallized spikes, while its legs house barbed ridges used to secure Gypceros hides across its thorax—camouflage for both utility and deception. Among its greatest assets is its silken webbing, which it produces rapidly and with high tensile strength. This silk is used to build lairs, entangle targets, and even allow the creature to swing across chasms in pursuit of intruders. Once ensnared, prey are reeled in and pierced by its retractable fangs, injecting potent venom that can rapidly sap stamina or render victims unconscious. Hunters who fall into its web often find escape nearly impossible without assistance or specialized tools. This adaptable predator appears in a range of locales—from the molten depths of the Oilwell Basin to the frozen cliffs of Iceshard, as well as more temperate areas like the Sunken Hollow, Primal Forest, and Everwood. In some cases, it has been found nesting near rural farmland, preying on livestock and even dragging away unfortunate farmers when the opportunity arises. Nests woven from thick silk threads are often abandoned and rebuilt elsewhere, allowing it to roam freely in search of better feeding grounds. In Monster Hunter Wilds, it now exhibits pack behavior, with swarms of Nerscylla Hatchlings spawning in colder biomes like the Iceshard Cliffs. These juvenile forms serve a dual purpose—harassing and distracting hunters during battles while also defending the adult from would-be attackers. Though small, they are fast and numerous, making them a persistent threat when ignored. When climbing upside down or navigating elevated surfaces, poison steadily drips from its back. This dripping liquid occasionally leaves a shiny drop, though this behavior ceases once the creature’s back has been broken twice. If afflicted by the Frenzy Virus, the creature no longer leaks venom—but instead drips corrupted frenzy fluid, adding a new hazard to its already toxic arsenal. The webbing used by Nerscylla is so durable that it can hold even large monsters in place if timed correctly. Its barbed claws serve a dual purpose—while used in combat, they also act like hooks, allowing it to cling to walls and ceilings with ease. Nerscylla's use of dead monster hides for camouflage is among the few known cases of tools and environmental mimicry seen in large monsters. Despite its monstrous appearance, Nerscylla displays complex behaviors, including playing with captured prey as a form of stimulation—an unsettling trait first noted after it abducted Rove.
