Heroku and Slack work very well together. Beyond simple messaging, Slack allows for task automation and integration with a variety of applications. In our sample application we're looking at an application for managing and maintaining a cattle herd. There's a web and Slack interface for this so cowpokes can interact with either app style. The herd can be fed, watered, moved to a different pasture location, and if needed the status can be set to request a vet visit. There are a lot of different workflow possibilities here, but we've built out a simple one, leaving the others to your implementation and imagination. We've enabled workflow automation for Low Feed Supply. When the feed level on the ranch gets below 25%, an automated message is sent to the #supply-orders channel in Slack informing the ranch manager that it's time to order feed. This is done through a webhook to our Python application which is hosted on Heroku. Beyond the workflow automation though, the custom Python application is also handling the web interface and the interactivity of the Slack application.
