The Ohio State University named Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi Bellamkonda as its next president on Thursday, filling a leadership vacancy days after Ted Carter Jr. resigned. He was appointed by the university’s Board of Trustees on Thursday to become the institution’s 18th president. The university will announce plans for leadership of the provost’s office in the coming weeks. Bellamkonda earned his bachelor's degree in engineering from Osmania University. He trained as a bioengineer and neuroscientist through a PhD program at Brown University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In remarks following his appointment, Ballamkonda pledged to redouble the university's commitment to excellence. “Looking ahead, knowing our collective strengths, I promise you this: Together we will take on hard things that are worth doing,” he said. “Hard things that are worth doing in athletics, in healthcare, in education, in fact, in all the things we do. We will lead, and we will not be afraid to lead.” Since Jan. 14, 2025, Bellamkonda served as Ohio State’s executive vice president and provost. In that role, he led several programs and initiatives in the Office of Academic Affairs and Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge. Bellamkonda helped craft and lead early phases of the university’s Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan, which includes the AI Fluency initiative, launching the Career Center of Excellence and launching faculty hiring programs. Before coming to Ohio State, Bellamkonda held leadership, research or teaching positions at Emory University, Duke, Georgia Tech and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He and his wife, Dr. Lalita Kaligotla, have two children and a goldendoodle named C.J.
