On the 17th June 2023, over 250 singers came together to sing a new song, Song 8: A Hymn's Review? The Amazing Grace 250 Voices was part of the Amazing Grace 250 project and programme led by the Cowper & Newton Museum which marked the 250th anniversary of the writing of the hymn by the Rev'd John Newton to accompany the sermon for his New Year's Day service on the 1st January 1773. Commissioned by the Cowper & Newton Museum with the Stables, Song 8: A Hymn's Review? was created for a large community choir as part of Forever?, a major new piece of music for voices and orchestra. Forever? is a contemporary poetic and musical response to the complex legacy of the hymn and its author. With music by the composer Roderick Williams and text by Rommi Smith, Forever? was first performed in full at the Stables, Milton Keynes on 22nd July 2023, as part of Amazing Grace 250 and IF:Milton Keynes International Festival. The Amazing Grace 250 Voices was organised by Musical Director, Craig McLeish. With thanks also to the singers, Musical Directors and supporters from all the choirs who took part, including: Chanteuses Hart and Soul Community Choir Grand Union Community Choir Polymnia TGI Choir Musica Charity Choir Vocalshack MK Chorale Pop Chorus Milton Keynes Community Choir Birmingham Town Hall Gospel Choir With special thanks to Craig McLeish and everyone involved in the Milton Keynes Community Choirs Festival 2023 Amazing Grace 250 was led by the Cowper & Newton Museum and in collaboration with the Open University, Friends of the Caribbean MK, the Stables, African Diaspora Federation MK, African and Caribbean Arts & Heritage Union MK, Milton Keynes Sierra Leone Community and the parish church of St Peter & St Paul, Olney. Supported by Arts Council England and Milton Keynes Council, with the education programme supported by Milton Keynes Community Foundation and Wavendon Foundation.
