The entire route that James Dean used on his final drive on September 30, 1955 without any narration at the top of each segment. If you would like to see this video with narrated interstitials, please click over to my Elated Explorer Channel here: • Видео For this historic drive, wherever it still exists, I have used Old U.S. Route 99 since James Dean had to take that route back in 1955 through the San Fernando Valley, the Grapevine Pass, and up through the Central Valley. For those portions of U.S. 99 that no longer exist, in its place I have used the current California State Route 99 alignment and Interstate 5 in place of the Old U.S. Route. The road that Dean lost his life on, U.S. Route 466, is now named California State Route 46. And the road that intersected with it, Signed Route 41, is now CA State Route 41. It is significantly shorter to have used Van Nuys Blvd as compared to using Sepulveda Blvd because the latter would have greatly elongated the scalene triangle that U.S. Route 99 creates at the northern end of the San Fernando Valley (Ventura Blvd and the route northward to U.S. 99 being the other two sides of that triangle). As a resident of Sherman Oaks, he would have known this. Also, his route through the central valley would have been north on Old U.S. Route 99, through Bakersfield and north to Famoso Highway, which was where Old U.S. Route 466 turned west through Wasco, Lost Hills, Blackwells Corner, and then to the accident site. I have seen a few articles on the internet saying that he took CA SR 166 west from U.S. 99 to Maricopa, then turned north on CA SR 33 through Taft and up to Blackwells Corner to avoid going through downtown Bakersfield. It is possible that Dean could have used routes 166 and 33, but to me is unlikely for these reasons: 1) The citation issuing CHP officer, Otie Hunter, stated that after releasing James Dean and Bill Hickman (who was driving the station wagon behind Dean and was also cited) from the stop, they drove north to Bakersfield on a clear line of site. 2) Rolf Wütherich, Dean’s passenger and mechanic who survived the crash wrote in an article that they went through Bakersfield and then turned west through Wasco on Old US 466. 3) The alternate drive would have been through very desolate areas with only two small towns and a few farms with no services. It seems unlikely that two caravanning cars would have chosen that environment, creating more of a problem in the case of a breakdown, all in order to save only seven miles. However, for the reason that it remains a vague possibility that they drove it instead of the conventional way, I have shot the alternate route in addition to the route on this video, that is, U.S. 99 to CA SR 166, to CA SR 33, to U.S. 466. Below is a separate link for this video. I will pick it up from his location of the citation in Mettler to his stop in Blackwells Corner, rather than showing his whole route again from Sherman Oaks to Cholame. I am keeping the video as “Unlisted” so as not to advertise and confuse people with yet a third version of this presentation. Here is the link without any narrated intro: • Unlikely Alternate Route - CA SR 166 to CA... Citation Location on Old U.S. Route 99: Type exactly this into Google Maps: 35.04128N, 118.96226W Be sure to go to the service road at the CA SR 116 exit. It’s called “Mettler Frontage Rd E,” but it may not be signed. Do not stop on CA SR 99 itself. When arriving at the location on the service road, do a U-turn and park on the northbound side of the service road with your hazard lights blinking. There is a shoulder on the northbound side of the service road. Always look for traffic when crossing any streets from and back to your car. Photo used by permission (c) Dennis Stock/Magnum Photos.
