In this episode of the Dr. Harch Podcast, Will Boytim describes the devastating reality his son Robert endured following a near-fatal drowning injury. For 37 days in the hospital, Robert remained trapped in severe neurological spasticity while doctors refused to consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy despite being presented with medical literature, textbooks on hyperbaric medicine, and direct consultation with Dr. Paul Harch. Robert’s body was locked in painful muscle spasms so intense that his joints creaked and his muscles became “bar hard.” His limbs twisted into unnatural positions while doctors repeatedly told the family that Robert would never walk, talk, or recognize his parents again. Will Boytim argues that this suffering could have been prevented if physicians had been willing to explore treatment options earlier in the injury process. Instead, the Boytim family believes Robert remained in a painful neurological state because doctors refused to step outside conventional treatment protocols. The conversation highlights the emotional and ethical challenges families face when hospital systems refuse to attempt therapies that fall outside traditional standards of care, even when those therapies carry minimal risk. Robert Boytim’s story is part of the documentary project Undeniable Evidence: A Father’s Fight, directed by John Salcedo of L.A. City Films.
