Horsemeat from torturous production: slaughterhouse Sarel, Uruguay

Our investigations show severe problems with animal welfare and consumer protection in the overseas production of horsemeat for EU and Swiss markets. Audit reports by the EU Commission of EU-approved slaughterhouses in Australia, North and South America confirm our observations. The European and Swiss importers are trying to achieve acceptance for horsemeat from overseas with their project “Respectful Life”. In cooperation with the Belgian University of Leuven, announced slaughterhouse controls are carried out and their findings published online. However, their reports show a different reality. The horsemeat importers in Switzerland and the EU are allowing themselves to be duped by the cheap tricks of the slaughterhouse operators. Announced controls are being prepared and manipulated also at Sarel slaughterhouse in Uruguay. Temporary weather protection and shelters are being set up. The slaughterhouse pastures are emptied and only a few healthy horses remain on the slaughterhouse premises on the day of the inspection. Once the inspectors have left, the cruel reality continues at Sarel. Then the horses are beaten again; injured, sick and emaciated horses are back at the slaughterhouse. For days, the horses are left to their own devices. The weather protected area is no longer in use. On overcrowded pastures and in narrow pens, the horses are exposed to adverse weather conditions until they are slaughtered.
