This is a short film about a guy who accidentally takes a job as a fixer. Starring Morgan Roberts, Elisabeth Meurer, Charley Boon, JJ Jackman, Adam Sands, James Moorer, and my mother-in-law's dog. We made it over a couple of weekends with an iPhone, using natural and practical lights that were there. 90% handheld, using a simple tripod. We shot with just the regular camera app without any special lens attachments. We weren't able to shoot in slow motion because it made the LED lights in the Speakeasy appear to flicker, so instead for those moments, rather than force wonky slo-mo in post, on the day everyone just "acted slowly" for what's hopefully added comedic effect. A fun instance of turning an unexpected restraint into an opportunity. The phone was great for fitting the camera into places where most cameras can't go, in corners, back against walls, between rafters--many of the shots here wouldn't have been possible with a larger camera. All of the dialogue was 100% rerecorded in post-production (ADR) because there was no practical way to record good sound in the locations--but we prefer that for our process anyway because it allows for shooting much faster, it allows for more choices in post, and ADR gives the actors an additional opportunity to fine-tune their performances. The inspiration for this story was ... my friend has a speakeasy and we wanted to shoot something there. We premiered this at the Gen Con Film Festival.
