Jonas Erdmann's art song, "Good Evening, Good Night!", or alternatively in German, "Guten Abend, Gute Nacht!", was composed in 2019, shortly before the COVID era. The song uses the expressionist language shared by many German composers from the late Romantic period to the early modernist era. Erdmann's lieder contains very chromatic and often dissonant melodies, but stays (albeit reluctantly) within the confines of the Common Practice period. On the other hand, the rich whole-tone harmonies that are occasionally interspersed also lend the impression (no pun intended) that it may also have been influenced by the same Impressionism of Debussy and Ravel. As the song ends, one will find that the singer does not even end on the tonic key. The tonal equilibrium is only established when the piano resolves back to the tonic, alone. As the title implies, the song was inspired by Johannes Brahms' own "Wiegenlied", or "Lullaby" in English. Within the composition itself, one can hear a brief quotation of the elder bygone master.
