This session will provide insight into using graphic memoir and autobiographical graphic novels (such as Maus and Persepolis) as tools for teaching, with examples drawn from Thi Bui’s “illustrated memoir” The Best We Could Do. The dual modalities of prose and sequential art create a unique reading experience, offering opportunities to engage both reluctant and avid readers. During this workshop, participants will explore: Teaching The Best We Could Do in the classroom as a historical source, as literature, and as a mentor text for student writing; Analyzing and evaluating visual texts as a distinctive art form, using a sample chapter breakdown from The Best We Could Do; Using principles of Visual Literacy to “decode” graphic storytelling, getting students to interpret images along with language; Placing Thi Bui’s work in context with a very brief overview of graphic literature and its rise in popularity for all ages; Recommendations for applying the creative process of making comics to multiple assignments. Presenters: Tim Rifenburg, WCSD – RCK Global Studies Teacher, and Bradley Diuguid, PPLD / Hudson Valley Writing Project Learn more at https://poklib.org/events/2021-big-read/
