Super Animator: Takafumi Hori (堀剛史) Hori is an animator who graduated from The Film Department at Musashino University of Arts, entered Nippon Animation, and moved to Madhouse shortly after. In Madhouse he first worked alongside Takeshi Koike in Trava Fist Planet, as well as working for various studio and external projects. During that time he already demonstrated a high capacity for fluid, consistent, dynamic animation and a great ability to represent things in space. His frame modulation is also notable, performing full animation at the exact moment so that the movement feels as fluid as possible. He joined the production of Redline and came under the close supervision of Takeshi Koike, which resulted in a lot of very sophisticated mechanical animation, generally maintaining the mechanical designs without reducing all the elements that characterized his work. After Madhouse went bankrupt, Hori left the studio along with tons of other members, working on different projects for different studios. When the Anime Mirai project started in 2012, Takafumi Hori joined the "Little Witch Academia" project of the new studio Trigger, under the strict supervision of You Yoshinari. Hori served as Assistant Animation Director and as one of four experienced Animators (Main Animators) involved in the project. Having worked under the tutelage of Yoshinari undoubtedly left a huge influence on his later works, as he is currently the animator with the style closest to Yoshinari's, especially in the circular movement of the characters, the smears and the background animation. Since Kill la Kill went into production immediately after LWA ended,, Hori also participated actively as an animator, Assistant AD and as AD, giving rise to all the collaborations he carried out for the studio's projects and even working for western Cartoon Network productions. His animation is still under the direct influence of Yoshinari, being able to perform any type of animation without problems, be it Character Acting, Mechanical Animation, Animal Animation, etc. maintaining the smooth and circular movement, the simulation of weight in the characters and with a great handling of the perspective and three-dimensionality of the objects. His Animation of Effects is also remarkable, always presenting a strong sensation of three-dimensionality. Sakuga (作画) literally means drawing. It is not something specific like "super spectacular animation", but the term is used to define a well animated sequence and that's it, good animation. Animation is fundamentally movement, so a sequence with good movement is already good animation, the effects and uses of cinematography are only added to the base.
