Exploring the piano works of a quiet innovator who wrote strikingly original music. Charles Koechlin (1867–1950) didn't begin to realize how important his music was until his 40s or 50s. He had worked alongside and gained the respect of composers like Fauré, Debussy, Satie, Ravel, Milhaud, and many more, but none of his works achieved the level of lasting international acclaim that theirs did. To Koechlin, the most important thing was to compose; the music would be understood later. This video outlines the essential characteristics of Koechlin's piano music, contextualizes them within his life and career, and ends by offering possible ways to better appreciate and understand his music. Throughout, you will hear the voice of Koechlin himself and those of his children alongside the thoughts of scholars and Koechlin's esteemed musician colleagues. Original analysis of Koechlin's works alternates with frequent and extended musical excerpts to allow the viewer to come to their own conclusions. While I think Koechlin's music actually benefits a lot from the warmth and enveloping sound of modern instruments, I wanted to offer some of his works on a period instrument sound for comparison. On 16 April 1907 Koechlin told Louis Aguettant that at Villiers he had “a very bad but exquisite old piano that has the sonority of a muted string quartet, with deep and distant bass notes.” This gave me some inspiration to craft the sound accordingly.
