Nestled in the heart of Dhenkanal, Sarakapatna village resonates with the rhythmic clatter of handlooms, as over 140 households meticulously weave the magic of 'Hastatanta sarees'. Step into the enchanting world of Sarakapatna, where the illustrious 'Hastatanta' legacy has gracefully flourished for over a century now. Prepare to be captivated by a timeless artistry that has left an indelible mark on the fabric of history. These exquisite sarees, crafted from the finest handloom silk, bear testament to the unwavering pride and dedication of the villagers. Meet Bichitra Sahu, a master of the loom, who proudly proclaims his identity intertwined with this art for more than three decades. The overwhelming popularity these sarees have garnered over time fails to surprise him, for their uniqueness is as alluring as their name suggests. Thanks to the district administration and the government of Odisha, Sarakapatna has received a significant boost. Spacious rooms have been allocated for the artists to showcase their creations twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Additionally, the government has extended support by providing machinery, loans of up to Rs 50,000, and inverters to ensure the continuity of this treasured legacy. When you embark on a journey to Dhenkanal, be sure to carve out some time to explore a place where art is not only cherished but lived and breathed. Sarakapatna's Hastatanta sarees possess the power to conquer markets far and wide, but it is through our unwavering support that these talented artistes will find the motivation to carry this ancient tradition forward for generations to come.
