Molonket ole Sempele is believed to be the first Kenyan to study in the United States, arriving in the American South at the height of racial violence and segregation. He studied in Virginia only a few years after the 1906 Atlanta Race Riots, witnessing firsthand the harsh realities of Jim Crow America. When he returned to Kenya, Sempele applied these experiences to missionary work, education, and advocacy among the Maasai. Fluent in several African languages, he rejected colonial racial hierarchies, resisted Maasai displacement through education, and later became associated with early African political movements that alarmed the colonial administration. This video explores the life of the first Kenyan student in the USA—and how that experience shaped one of Kenya’s earliest intellectual resisters.
