Lyrics William Shakespeare — Sonnet 18 (public domain) Original: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed; But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Modern adaptation (Pleiadesiac): Should I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re sweeter, softer, and much more at ease: Rough winds will blow the blooming buds away, And summer’s season has a quick-release. Sometimes the sun will shine a bit too bright, And other days its face is hid in gloom; And everything once lovely fades from sight, By nature’s way or by bad luck’s dark doom. But your eternal beauty will not die, Nor will you lose the glow you have today; Nor will Death claim you with a final sigh, Because these lines will give you life and stay: So long as human eyes can read it through, These words will live, and they give life to you.
