Geshe Zopa opened with mantras and Guru Rinpoche prayers. We are studying the text 'Eight Sessions Mind Training' from page 225 of the anthology 'Mind Training: the Great Collection'. Geshela spoke of Atisha's relationship with his root guru, Serlingpa, and explained the three types of vows offered by the root guru. He discussed the four opponent powers in relation the guru. The guru is a wonderful way to create merit, by offering service and following the guru's advice to become virtuous. We can relate to our life from a standing point of altruism. When facing difficulties and depression use wisdom of karma to understand purification and feel blessed. Geshela gave practical and inspiring instructions on the practice of giving and taking, Tong Len. Geshela discussed the concept of pure virtue, not virtue contaminated by a grasping and a lack of understanding of emptiness. All virtues can be purified by contemplating them within the expanse of emptiness. Geshela explained that we need to receive the first foundational lineage of transmission, and then we need to receive the lineage of realisations by working hard, and doing Dharma 'homework'.
