Nearly 7 in 10 have been rejected by their families, and over half have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The 40% Project aims to promote the acceptance of LGBT youth by sharing the stories of those most affected by intolerance through a series of short films. We are working with one of DC's bright spots on this issue, Casa Ruby. Casa Ruby is the city's only Bilingual Multicultural LGBT Organization providing life saving services to the most vulnerable in the LGBT community, addressing a variety of needs from hypothermia to safe injection of hormones. However, the top factors identified as barriers to improving services related to reducing LGBT homelessness all deal with lack of funding. There are currently no federal programs specifically designed to meet the needs of gay and transgender homeless youth, and there are no protections in place to keep them from being discriminated against while accessing federally funded homeless services.
