**WARNING** HUGE SCENARIO DESCRIPTION BELOW "Bates" is the deuteragonist of "Clock Tower II" that only the US Version included as such personality. The Japanese Version (Ghost Head) had "Shō (翔)" which was also a vicious cold-blooded spirit but not so cruel, cynical, tough-acting and foul-mouthed as Bates. I believe the character of Bates made this game better than the original version. The scenario of this game is difficult to understand due to the limited ways HUMAN had available to expose the mechanics and scenario-unveiling of the game. And also due to the Japanese-English translation methods and localization marketing plans. But to clear out some facts of the scenario: • Lynn Maxwell is the real name of Alyssa Hale. • The biological father of Lynn is George Maxwell and her adoptive father is Allen Hale. • In George's family there is a family curse which is called the Maxwell Curse. • According to the in-game's family legend, it is believed that "If twin girls would be born into the Maxwell family, they should be buried alive as they should be considered cursed to bring a grudge to the Maxwell family. ("buried within the Maxwell Tree that resides in a graveyard" adds the US Version).「女子の双子が生まれたら才堂家に仇なす家系の呪いをもたらす忌まわしき呪いの双子とみなし、生き埋めにせよ」. • George had two twin daughters, which one of them is Lynn. We know that the other one is a girl because the curse took place, but we don't know the other girl's name. • George buried alive his twin daughters to prevent the curse. • Due to the unfair existence of the Maxwell Curse, George hatched a Cerebral Toxin (HU599) spread plan as revenge against all of humanity. (This is the fake curse -zombies-) • There are 2 curses in the story. The "real" curse and the "fake" curse. • The REAL curse is that if twin girls within the Maxwells are born, they will be possessed by an evil spirit as an alter ego. Interestingly, the legend in the game says: "if this happen, it brings a grudge to the family" but without telling you how or what. They left that for you to find out while playing the game. • The FAKE curse was propagated by Allen Hale (infecting the statue with George's cerebral toxin to eliminate specific people) because he believed the real curse was unexistent and wanted to create a disaster to George Maxwell and later to Phillip Tate, and mask it as the real curse. • George was a genius and a successful man who worked at Memorial Pharmaceuticals Research Lab and ousted Allen Hale out of his position as one of the top lab technicians. • Allen became envious of George's brilliance, success and wealthy family. • Allen alongside his friend Philip Tate, dug up the grave of the twins and found alive only Lynn (Alyssa) and saved her. (The Maxwell Grave was inside a tree or its roots, that's why probably she was still alive). • Allen possesses a golden statue (or Yellow Doll) which he may have purchased it or discovered it within the Maxwell Grave (not exactly specified). • Allen infected the statue by implanting a toxin inside it, which, when touched, should cause the victim to initially appear hostile and develop insane behavior. • Allen sent the statue to George to ruin him. • Then he also sent it to Philip as a special gift for him, for not telling anything about the dig up incident that night. • Bates/Shō is the evil alter ego of Alyssa and can only be dormant if she wears the Mikoshi Amulet. • Bates/Shō is NOT the spirit of Alyssa's deceased twin who became trapped in Alyssa's body. The description of the curse refers that it takes effect if twin girls are born "女子の双子が生まれたら". Also the Bates official in-game biography depicts him as a ghost seeking revenge on the Maxwell family (signifying him as the original curse) and not Alyssa's twin brother. This looks like he was an outcome from the evolution of the curse, in reaction to the Maxwells' actions. • In the end, Allen regrets for his acts and protects Alyssa from George who is trying to kill her, as at the same time by shooting him, he also gives his soul the opportunity to rest. He activates the lab's self-destruction mode to kill most of the zombies along with the toxin source, and informs Alyssa to leave the place while he collapses there. Some Facts about Bates/Shō: • Bates is voiced by "Roger L. Jackson" who is popular for voicing Ghostface (Scream), Mojo Jojo/Butch (Powerpuff Girls), Shintaro Fuma (Yakuza), Chesire Cat [+more] (Alice: McGee's & Madness Returns), Gen Fu (Dead or Alive 2), Metallo (Superman: The Man of Steel), Elder Male Sim (The Sims 2), Saruman The White (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor), The Local Pedestrian Population (Red Dead Redemption 2), MacCarfey/Radio Voice (Alone in the Dark) and many many more. • Unlike the US Version, Shō's Japanese voice actor, Fujiko Takimoto, is female in order to better match Alyssa's appearance and gender. • The term "Ghosthead" refers to Shō/Bates as we can ascertain it from the kanjis in their japanese names (翔 used many times for spirits).
