The Rocca di Populonia is located in a panoramic position in the homonymous hamlet of Piombino and dominates, from a hill, the Gulf of Baratti, the coast north of Piombino and the stretch of sea between the mainland and the Tuscan archipelago. Located on the acropolis of ancient Pupluna, the fortress was reborn as a medieval castle in the fourteenth century, after centuries of abandonment of the town. The current forms show a transitory structure, between the medieval building and the modern fortification of the late fifteenth century: if the sides facing the cliffs of the hill were equipped at most with buttresses, cannoning at this altitude is unlikely, the one facing the road was equipped with a semicircular keep, with a solid base, equipped with slits and Ghibelline battlements. The tall central tower, with a medieval plan, former keep of the medieval fortress dominates the whole. Equipped with a high scarp, it has a wall made of irregular blocks, except at the corners, a raised door and a crenellation with four elements on the long sides and three on the short ones. Rare for Tuscany is the presence of the double protruding, inwards and outwards, frequent instead in the Scaliger castles. The fifteenth-century walls have a rectangular plan, close to the square, with a walkway and sentry boxes at the corners. The semi-cylindrical masonry of the south-west side is later, also equipped with a scarp and a walkway higher than the other sides. It also has loopholes on the internal side, to defend itself from any enemies that have penetrated inside. The fortress is then joined to the walls of the village.
