Providence has joined the Critical Care Society's ICU Liberation Campaign - a quality improvement initiative to reduce incidence of delirium for intensive care patients. "The ICU Liberation Campaign is a bundled approach to improving outcomes of ICU patients," says Carol Benson, RN MSN - Chief Nursing Officer at Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. "Bundles are a process of care delivery, that look at different components of a patient's care, such as patient assessment; including the family in the patient's care; and early mobility for patients - even those who are on ventilators." The campaign also works to optimize pain control, and reduce exposure to sedatives, time on mechanical ventilators, and improve time patients are free of delirium and coma. "Evidence shows that long-term stays in the ICU impact a patient's cognitive ability - even up to a year after care," Carol explains. "Some patients can't even balance their checkbook after they've had time in the intensive care unit. Early intervention helps to have better outcomes after care."
