Judson beat Churchill 10-7 in the epic 1982 Quarterfinal matchup at Alamo Stadium. Jefferson beat Churchill 8-7 to start the 1983 season, and Jay tied the Chragers 13-13 the following week before the Chargers finally got untracked. Judson, meanwhile was sailing along at 6-0 when the two met in Converse on October 14. Judson came back from an early 10-0 deficit to win 21-10 in front of 14000---the largest crowd at that point to attend a game in Converse. Roosevelt shocked Judson 35-24 in Converse the following week, coming back from a 17-0 Halftine deficit. The previous evening, Madison nailed Churchill for a Safety on the opening kickoff, and then scored on the final play of the game for an 8-6 verdict. Churchill appeared to be out of it until Maidson beat TR 9-6 in the last game of the season. This knocked TR out of the playoffs, and gave Judson the top seeding in 27-5A. On to the playoffs. Churchill picked up momentum once in th playoffs, starting with a 14-14 tie with Marshall that advanced them on penerations. Judson had two very tough games to start the playoffs---a 24-21 verdict over the emerging Clark Cougars in Converse, and a 20-7 decision over Dulles in Ft. Bend County that saw the Rockets trail 7-3 at intermisson with only 50 yards of offesne at that point (they ended with 250 yards in a spectacular second-half surge). The following week with Alice at UT Memorial Stadium , starting QB Cap Watters went down with a cracked rib, and Allen Deer was reinstated in his starting role (he was sidelined with an injury just before the season began). Meanwhile Churchill took care of business down in the Valley and the 1983 rematach was on for Friday, December 2, 1983. Area-wide interest was still high---high enough to cause KSAT Ch 12 to decide to provide live, prime time TV coverage coverage on a Friday evening. The Rockets got a good bounce in the kickoff and Chris Pryor carried all seven (7) times on the 55-yard drive that put the Rockets up early. The rout, it would turn out, was on.
