The Inner Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation was a sucessor organisation by Gotze Delchev to the Inner Bulgarian Revolutionary Organisation of Vasil Kunchev. It's last powerful leader- Ivan Mihaylov led it during WW2 and the interwar days, fighting for bulgarian autonomy/independence in the geographic region of Macedonia(Modern day republic of North Macedonia and North Greece). After the authoritarian socialist forces took control of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia they began purging IMRO members and in order to stop bulgarian nationalist tendencies, they also began to create an artificial etchnic group - macedonians, made up of bulgarians which were forcefully made to believe that they were heirs of Alexander's hellenic empire. The project was not completed because of the leader of Yugoslavia - Tito having political problems with Stalin and Dimitrov and also because of Dimitrov's later death. Hundredths of thousands of bulgarians died both Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in the etchnic cleansing project that was "macedonism", primarily in death camps, concentration camps such as Belene or by being killed off in specific forest locations. More than a million lost their bulgarian heritige and identity through opressive means. Ivan Mihaylov managed to escape in Italy and in 1990 he did an interview with bulgarian journalists in which he exposed this grim reality, which was hidden from the public by the socialist nations of Eastern Europe.
