Ecosystem respiration, and the respiration of soils and water bodies receives increasing attention worldwide. Targeting novices, this first in a series of five introductory videos, shows in easy steps how to start. Reading the system (here SEMACH-FG) manual is always a must-do and supervision by experienced personnel is highly recommended at the start. We start with 1) site selection and preparation (ring setting), then go step by step via 2) unboxing the equipment from its transport containers and attaching the components, including sensor activation to 3) chamber activation, data recording and chamber equilibration. This includes recommendations for measureing routines. At the end, information is given on the four other videos.
