(23 Aug 1998) Arabic/Eng/Nat Whipping up popular anger over Thursday's U-S missile strike, Sudan's President Omar el-Bashir has said the Sudanese are prepared to die in a holy war. El-Bashir told a central Khartoum rally of at least 5-thousand people on Saturday that America was attacking them because they are guardians of Islam. After el-Bashir's speech, some 500 protesters went to the British Embassy and hurled stones at the building, while one demonstrator climbed the embassy flagpole and cut down the Union Jack. The crowd outside the British Embassy in Khartoum included Cabinet ministers, members of parliament, trade unionists and students who had been given the day off to attend the earlier rally. The 500 or so protesters hurled stones at the embassy building. One demonstrator climbed the embassy flagpole and cut down the Union Jack. After the flag fell to the ground, angry demonstrators tore it to pieces. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed support for the U-S missile attack on a factory in north Khartoum on Thursday. Washington says the factory produced ingredients for chemical weapons, while Khartoum says it manufactured only pharmaceutical products. One person was killed in the attack and nine others were wounded. U-S President Bill Clinton ordered the cruise missile strike in retaliation for the bombings of the U-S embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on August 7. U-S missiles also struck the Afghanistan camps of millionaire Islamic extremist Osama bin Laden, the man whom Washington accuses of instigating the embassy bombings. Sudan's government, beleaguered by economic failure and 15 years of war against southern insurgents, has sought to use the missile strikes to rally support. Chanting "Down Down U-S-A", thousands of people gathered on the streets of Khartoum, venting their anger at the United States. As in similar demonstrations around the Middle East on Friday, the crowd set fire to American flags. To the joy of protesters, the rally was addressed by the Sudanese president himself. Omar el-Bashir struck a militant chord, calling Sudan's defiance of the United States a war for the sake of Islam. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "We have savoured the sweetness of faith. We've savoured the sweetness of Jihad. We've savoured the sweetness of martyrdom. All of us today are seeking martyrdom." SUPER CAPTION: Omar el-Bashir, Sudanese President El-Bashir heaped further criticism on the U-S president, describing him as wicked. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "Because Clinton and his followers and supporters are all immoral, they are fighting us because we have become a symbol of morality." SUPER CAPTION: Omar el-Bashir, Sudanese President The Islamic leaders in Sudan, where as many as nine out of 10 of the country's 28 (m) million people live in poverty, oversee a network of well-organised cadres which can turn out thousands people into the streets. Their security network is pervasive, closely monitoring dissent. Sudan's beleaguered government has sought to use the air strikes, which left one dead and nine wounded, to rally a people weary of war and economic hardship. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "This is undoubtedly state terrorism. America is talking about terrorism while it is the leader of terrorism in the world. As for the Sudanese people we are certain that, God willing, the Sudanese people will overcome this ordeal and, God willing, we are capable of responding to America through the measures we are going to take."
