In this SIM-PAC Live analysis, Geoff Matthews looks at the rapidly shifting economics of transport energy and why the hydrogen versus battery debate is no longer relevant. In 2025, China added more than seven million battery-electric vehicles and just over seven thousand hydrogen vehicles. At the same time, electric trucks and buses are scaling at speed, with battery-swap technology removing the final operational arguments for hydrogen in heavy transport. Across Australia and New Zealand, hydrogen transport remains in small-scale trials while battery-electric vehicles continue to grow rapidly. Globally, the learning rate of batteries — falling costs, rising density and faster charging — has outpaced expectations and reshaped the market. Hydrogen will still play an important role in decarbonising industry, fertiliser production and high-temperature heat. But for road transport, markets are already moving in a different direction. This is a look at where hydrogen fits, where it doesn’t, and why heavy transport is already shifting to batteries. Key takeaways China added ~7 million BEVs vs ~7,000 hydrogen vehicles in one year Electric trucks and buses are scaling rapidly Battery-swap technology removes refuelling and downtime barriers Battery costs have fallen ~96% since the mid-2010s Hydrogen remains critical for industry and high-temperature heat Road transport is moving toward electrification #electrictrucks #hydrogen #batteryelectricvehicle #energytransition #heavytransport #simpaclive #decarbonisation #batteryswap #evs Chapters 00:00 The Hydrogen Debate: A Shift in Perspective 02:02 Battery Technology: The Real Winner 04:22 The Future of Heavy Transport: Battery Swapping vs Hydrogen 05:51 Green Hydrogen: Niche Applications and Industrial Needs 06:03 endingv2.mp4
